Who would have thought a steroid cheater/liar would cause a flap at the Women’s World Hockey Championship?
Canadian players were plenty proud to put on the black and yellow Livestrong jerseys to resume their heated rivalry with the U.S. Tuesday night at Scotiabank Place.
It was one-game, one-off thing, but, deviating from the traditional Team Canada red and whites was enough to get some undies in a knot.
The players were on board, buying into the powerful message of Livestrong, a hugely hyped, but wonderful cancer support group.
Team Canada alternate captain Jayna Hefford’s dad Larry died of cancer in December 2007.
“He was a healthy guy — he still played hockey and golfed,” said Hefford, who’s from Kingston. “He didn’t do all the risks — smoking, drinking and all that sort of stuff.”
Her grandmother, Phyllis Fleming, died of breast cancer at age 89 a month ago; her grandfather, George Fleming, also died of cancer.
“I don’t know how anyone could criticize the fact we’re supporting a charity that supports people who have cancer — and their families,” said Hefford. “I’m so proud to wear this jersey. People want to associate Lance (Armstrong) with Livestrong. Now they do so much work without him and they help so many people.
“It’s a real tough thing to see someone go through. The support they need is immense. That’s what Livestrong does — support people who have cancer and those who survive it.”
